FOSSIL FUELS AND HYDROCARBON DEVELOPMENT
Fossil fuels and hydrocarbons (oil, natural gas, coal) power most of the world’s transportation vehicles and combustion engines. They are thus a crucial source of energy and economic security. However, their ubiquitous use also poses a significant threat to the earth’s environment.
REC consults on issues and initiatives that go to the heard of this delicate balance, including:
- Integrating environmental protection programs into national, state, and municipal government economic development and energy planning initiatives
- Designing policy structures and reform packages to encourage private sector transition away from the most polluting forms of hydrocarbons
- Technology transfer and capacity building for cleaner hydrocarbon use
- Sustainable natural gas development strategies incorporating environmental and safety considerations
- Urban environmental planning
