POVERTY REDUCTION
Developing country governments must constantly assess how their initiatives will impact the poor. REC assists governments and their partners in this endeavor in a number of ways:
- For broad-ranging, large-infrastructure projects, REC works with its clients to develop a poverty reduction strategy. In the Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Development Project in Lao PDR, REC assisted the government in developing a plan to earmark a portion of the economic proceeds for poverty reduction. REC also assisted in designing specific poverty reduction measures and programs
- REC works with clients on small-scale infrastructure projects that specifically target the poor. We have worked with both the Indian and Chinese governments on rural electrification projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the predominantly low-income population in rural areas
UNDP recently published a report on poverty reduction best practices in developing country infrastructure projects.
