Fossil Fuels and Hydrocarbon Development

FOSSIL FUELS AND HYDROCARBON DEVELOPMENT

Fossil fuels and hydrocarbons (oil, natural gas, coal) power most of the world’s transportation vehicles and combustion engines. They are thus a crucial source of energy and economic security. However, their ubiquitous use also poses a significant threat to the earth’s environment.

REC consults on issues and initiatives that go to the heard of this delicate balance, including:

  • Integrating environmental protection programs into national, state, and municipal government economic development and energy planning initiatives
  • Designing policy structures and reform packages to encourage private sector transition away from the most polluting forms of hydrocarbons
  • Technology transfer and capacity building for cleaner hydrocarbon use
  • Sustainable natural gas development strategies incorporating environmental and safety considerations
  • Urban environmental planning
